Oslo, Norway, 15 October 2024 – Leading thermal storage provider ENERGYNEST and global crop nutrition leader Yara International welcomed Terje Aasland, Norwegian Minister of Energy, to Yara’s fertilizer production facility in Porsgrunn, Norway, to visit ENERGYNEST’s first-of-its-kind thermal storage installation is in operation. During his time in Porsgrunn, the Minister spoke with members of the ENERGYNEST and Yara teams and representatives from Innovation Norway about scaling green technology like thermal energy storage solutions from ENERGYNEST in Europe and beyond.

ENERGYNEST has partnered with Yara to integrate its 4 MWh ThermalBatteryTM to the steam grid at the Porsgrunn facility. The battery stores thermal energy by condensing high-pressure steam then generating low-pressure steam on demand. This increases energy efficiency and provides greater flexibility to the facility’s grid. Overall, the system enables savings of 12GWh of electricity imports and 6,000 metric tons of indirect CO2 emissions annually.

Located at Herøya Industripark, Yara Porsgrunn is Norway’s largest industrial area and the world’s largest complex fertilizer plant using the nitrophosphate method. The facility provides 18 percent of Yara’s total fertilizer production and its products help feed approximately 50 million people around the world. Innovation Norway helps Norwegian companies to grow sustainably and increase exports by providing access to competence, capital and networks, including ENERGYNEST.

Terje Aasland, Minister of Energy, Norway, said: “In line with the energy transition, power generation from renewable, variable and non-regulated sources will increase. ENERGYNEST’s installation at Yara’s Porsgrunn facility is a great example of how Norwegian companies are enabling energy efficiency and flexibility.”

Dr. Christian Thiel, CEO, ENERGYNEST, said: “We were excited to welcome the Minister to visit our thermal energy storage solution – the first project of its kind in the world. Like many industrial sectors, the food value chain has had relatively few immediately available decarbonization solutions without disruption to supply chains. Our technology offers an alternative to fossil fuels by enabling industrial players like Yara to store and release renewable energy on demand helping to ensure greater food and energy security.”

Ole-Jacob Siljan, Plant Manager, Yara Porsgrunn,
said: “As the world’s leading supplier of mineral fertilizer, we are striving to make our operations as sustainable as possible and have already reduced our emissions by 60% percent subject to quotas since 2005. Yara is proud to be a first mover in the thermal storage sector through our collaboration with ENERGYNEST as we are continually working to invest in technology-based solutions that will assist us to decarbonizing the food value chain and transforming the food system.”
